Why It Matters

Why Professional Guano Removal Matters

Bird guano — particularly from pigeons — is not just unpleasant. It is a genuine health hazard and a corrosive agent that causes measurable damage to buildings, equipment, and infrastructure.

Health Risks
  • HistoplasmosisA fungal respiratory infection caused by inhaling spores from dried pigeon guano. Potentially serious in confined spaces. (Source: HSE)
  • PsittacosisA bacterial infection (Chlamydia psittaci) transmitted through inhalation of dried bird droppings or feather dust.
  • SalmonellaBacterial contamination spread through droppings in food preparation and storage environments.
  • CryptococcosisA fungal infection found in accumulations of pigeon droppings.
  • E.coliTransmitted through contact with bird faeces.
Structural Damage
  • Limestone and sandstoneYorkshire's prevalent building materials are particularly vulnerable to acidic guano (pH 3.5-4.5).
  • Steel structuresExposed steelwork in warehouses, car parks, and industrial units corrodes under guano deposits.
  • ConcreteParapets, walkways, and structural elements are eroded over time.
  • Roofing materialsTiles, lead flashing, and felt membranes are degraded by acidic deposits.
  • Paintwork and equipmentVehicle paintwork, CCTV cameras, solar panel wiring, and external plant.

A single feral pigeon produces 11-12 kg of droppings per year. A colony of 50 birds produces over half a tonne annually. Attempting to clean large accumulations without proper PPE and extraction equipment exposes anyone in the area to airborne pathogens.

Our Process

How Our Guano Removal Service Works

1

Survey & Risk Assessment

We assess the extent of contamination, identify health risks, evaluate access requirements, and determine the appropriate decontamination method. For commercial properties, we provide a full written risk assessment and method statement. Request your free survey.

2

Area Containment

The contaminated area is contained to prevent cross-contamination. Signage is deployed. In commercial environments, we coordinate with your facilities team to minimise disruption to operations.

3

Removal & Decontamination

Our operatives work in full PPE including respiratory protection, disposable coveralls, gloves, and eye protection. Guano is removed using specialist industrial vacuum equipment with HEPA filtration. Surfaces are then treated with biocidal disinfectant.

4

Bird Proofing

Cleaning without proofing is temporary. After every guano removal, we recommend appropriate bird proofing to prevent recontamination. This is the most cost-effective approach — solve the problem permanently.

Common Questions

Guano Removal FAQs

Yes. Dried pigeon droppings carry over 60 transmissible pathogens, including histoplasmosis, psittacosis, and salmonella. The greatest risk is inhalation of fungal spores when dried guano is disturbed. This is why professional removal with proper PPE and extraction equipment is recommended, particularly for large accumulations or confined spaces. (Source: HSE, BPCA)
Small amounts of fresh droppings on outdoor surfaces can be cleaned with water and household disinfectant. However, large accumulations — particularly dry droppings in enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces — should be handled by a professional. Disturbing dry guano without respiratory protection releases airborne spores.
A standard domestic loft or balcony clearance typically takes 2-4 hours. Commercial projects vary significantly — from a single day for a small contained area to several days for large warehouse or industrial sites.
Yes. All guano waste is bagged, sealed, and disposed of in accordance with waste management regulations. We provide waste transfer documentation for commercial clients.
Strongly recommended. Cleaning without proofing is a temporary fix — birds will return and the contamination will recur. We offer combined guano removal and bird proofing packages that solve the problem permanently.
